A loner, not alone
I just came across Jason Kottke’s post about introverts travelling, which links to an excellent article by Sophia Dempling. She deals with differencies in how people percieve new environments and other people, making some really fascinating points. The idea that communication and interaction can be tiring, even exhausting, is something that’s hard to imagine from an extroverted point of view.
Still, I’m recognizing myself in many cases – when I’m travelling, I tend to stress culture over people. If you want to know how a society works, don’t ask their people. Look at their high culture, look at magazines, architecture, their design approaches and citylight ads. Small talk is a waste of time, most of the time.
This Atlantic article (Caring for your Introvert
) also mentioned by Kottke has more on the subject. Feels like we’re living in a mainstream shaped by extroverts, because they are louder and quicker on any subject. Not smarter. Not more deliberate.
